Edward "Eddy" Longknife was the youngest son of William Longknife he was abducted as a child. During ransom negotiations, he suffocated under a pile of manure due to a faulty breathing device used by the kidnappers. Eddy and Kris's father got the ransom money he needed from his father, Alex Longknife.
Kris Longknife carried guilt for his death because he was taken while she had left him alone to buy ice cream for both of them. After the attempt to start a war between Turantic and other planets failed, Kris learned that she also had been the target of the abduction.
